In the middle of the night, a police comes to the Johnsons door to tell them that an accident has occurred and that their teenage daughter is deceased and another teen is in critical care. The accident was caused by texting and driving. Now the Johnsons have to go the morgue and identify their daughter, this is an accident that could have been prevented. In the Treasure Valley, there have been too many of these scenarios that have become a reality. Texting and driving should have the same consequences as drinking and driving because they are both caused by reckless driving. With the severity of the consequences this will lower the death rate and accident rate of accidents caused by texting and driving both locally and nationally. In the area In Ontario Oregon, there have been several accidents that have occurred where teens have been driving while texting and have caused accidents with minor injuries or other accidents that have caused death. Texting and driving is a distraction while driving and should be banned. I propose that texting and driving should become outlawed and offences be treated just like drinking and driving.
Studies have shown that texting and driving is worse than drinking and driving. Because texting is new to the times, there really is no type of testing done to prove that texting and driving do cause accidents and is unsafe. It has been proven, however, that it takes five seconds to look at a text message and refocus the eyes back on the road again. As stated in an article, “In Study, Texting, Lifts Crash Risk by Large Margin”, in that time, a person can drive about a football field. (Richetel, 2009) To be able to drive and text and look at the road for five seconds and is equivalent to a football field, that is a very dangerous, especially on the freeway. Drivers are on the road texting and driving and could be the one to cause a deadly

Technology has steadily grown and made advancements since the Industrial Revolution. One new technology that has become very popular in our society is text messaging. In the United States, over 700 million text messages are sent every year, and the numbers are growing rapidly with more competent cellular telephones. (“Learn About the Dangers of Text Messaging. Texting Dangers and Statistics.”) The first text message “Merry Christmas”, was sent in 1992 by Neil Papsworth. (Shannon, Victoria) This was the beginning of the texting phenomenon that would alter communication forever. Text messaging allows people to communicate quickly, easily, and it can be a replacement for phone calls when calls cannot be made or are unwanted. However, there is a negative and dangerous side to all the convenience of texting while driving.…

Every day we witness multiple tragic accidents involving people texting and driving. In my paper I will be arguing that the state of Minnesota should act boldly to create tougher laws on texting and driving offenders, and also create laws to ban people from using hands-free cell phones in their vehicle unless needed for an emergency. Also it is to be determined the meaning of texting and driving, the people involved, the laws needed to enforce it, which is affected when someone is injured or killed; and what is being done about it.…

In Harris County Texas it is said that one of the most dangerous crimes committed is drunk driving. Unfortunately drunk driving is a big issue hanging over the heads of law enforcement. Harris County is number one in the country for drunken driving fatalities, and yet I will make the argument that texting while driving is potentially as dangerous if not more as drunk driving. I believe the reason that this issue is more volatile than drunk driving because everyone is capable of texting while driving. Drunk driving is unique to people that drink alcohol, and when you take the entire population that drinks alcohol it pales in comparison to the population that text while driving. This issue is starting to make national headlines; the government is starting to pay attention to staggering statistics and acting. Since teenagers make up the majority of violators the government has found new ways to reach teenagers and young adults in marketing campaigns. While teenagers are not the only violators the marketing has been focused towards teenagers and young adults and it has shown to be effective in its early stages.…

Texting and driving affects everybody in a threatening way. It only takes a maximum of five seconds for someone's attention to get taken off the road while texting. Texting makes a crash twenty three more times likely to happen. If one is dialing, texting, or listening on a phone behind the wheel, the likeliness of an accident happening is 2.8 times greater for every minute that goes by. For even just reaching for your phone an accident is 1.4 times more likely (“Texting and Driving Statistics”). Since this situation has the ability to create all of these accidents, then the consequence should clearly be…

Five seconds are the average time your eyes are off the road while texting, when traveling at 55mph, that's enough to cover the length of an entire football field. (2009,VTTI) That's also enough time to get into a severe car accident. Many people realize the risk they are taking by texting and driving, but they seem to not care, seeing as how their phone is always in the palm of their hands, and they're paying more attention to it than their driving and surroundings. Forty nine percent of drivers under the age of 35 send or read text messages while driving. (2011, Harris Poll) That's an extremely high percentage, and any one of those people could cause the biggest collision you've ever seen in your entire life, in a matter of seconds. When you're texting and driving, you're reaction time is significantly decreased, so those five seconds you used to look at your phone, you could've used to notice that cars were beginning to brake, and you should've too.Congratulations,…

When drivers are busy reading, drafting, or sending a text message they are not fully paying attention to their surroundings. "Texting while driving causes a 400 percent increase in time spent with eyes off the road "(Thomas, 2009). Anything, at any time could happen and it could easily happen in the few seconds drivers eyes are on their phone instead of the road. Looking down from the road for a second seems harmless but not when driving involves full attention. "46 percent of teens say they text message while driving" (Thomas, 2009). That is 46 or 51 percent of the teen drivers on the road that are not directing their attention to the road, causing dangers to not just themselves and others, but also leaving them briefly out of control of their vehicle.…
