* Compare the views of Hubble and Friedman about the expansion of the universe:

Edwin Hubble’s observation
In 1929, Edwin Hubble announced that his observations of galaxies outside our own Milky Way showed that they were systematically moving away from us with a speed that was proportional to their distance from us. The more distant the galaxy, the faster it was receding from us. The universe was expanding after all, just as General Relativity originally predicted! Hubble observed that the light from a given galaxy was shifted further toward the red end of the light spectrum the further that galaxy was from our galaxy.

The specific form of Hubble's expansion law is important: the speed of recession is proportional to distance. Hubble expressed this idea in an equation - distance/time per megaparcec. A megaparcec is a really big distance (3.26 million light-years).

Alexander Friedman’s theory
In the early 1920’s Friedman for told a theory were universe begins with a Big Bang and continues expanding for untold billions of years (that’s the stage we’re in now.) Indeed, particle physics also suffers from an increasing contradiction between theory and experiment. Equally important, if the Big Bang never occurred our concept of time must change as well. Instead of a universe finite in time, running down from a fiery start to a dusty, dark finish, the universe will be infinite in duration, continuously evolving. Just such a concept of time as evolution is now emerging from new studies in the field of thermodynamics. The changes in these three fields—cosmology, particle physics, and thermodynamics—are merging into a single global transformation of how science views the universe, a transformation comparable to that which overthrew the Ptolemaic cosmos and initiated modern science.     Introduction:As we all know that light travels from source in a straight line(ray) according to concepts of classical ray optics. Redshift is the phenomenon by which light rays from distant stars that are observed on earth, show smaller frequency (longer wavelength) i.e. shifted towards the “red” end of the visible light region. This phenomenon of redshift is conventionally explained by the well-known “Doppler effect”. But according to the book “QED: The strange theory of light and matter” by Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman Redshift occurs due to the quantum mechanical propagation of photons. The Problem:Edwin HUBBLE discovered that light from distant stars exhibits longer wavelengths or reduced frequencies than that from similar radiation sources on Earth. All specific frequency lines in the electromagnetic spectrum of distant cosmic radiation sources appeared shifted towards the red end of the visible spectrum. His discovery therefore was called “astronomic redshift” defined by the redshift ratio, z = Δl / lo (1), - Δl: the elongation of a specific wave length - lo: the original wave length of emission at the source - Frequency n and wavelength lo of the radiation are correlated by the velocity of light in vacuum, c = n x (2). From on its discovery the Redshift phenomenon was referred to the “Dopplereffect of wave dynamics”, occurs when the source and the receiver are moving relative to each other.     Hubble’s law states that, “the distances between galaxies, or clusters of galaxies, are continually increasing and that therefore the universe is expanding.” (Infoplease) He proposed this after noticing that colors emitted from stars do not have the same wavelengths as one another in the red end of the color spectrum. People call these “red shifts.” People have speculated that these red shifts occur due to galaxies moving further away from our Milky Way galaxy. Hubble’s constant is how fast the galaxies move away from one another with time. Current evidence suggests that the galaxies move at about 73 kilometers per second per megaparsec. Back when Edwin Hubble originally created the law, he thought that the expansion rate was much larger due to him underestimating the distances between the galaxies. Scientists tend to disagree about how fast the galaxies move away from one another because they will disagree about what they think the value for Hubble’s constant should be. For this reason, scientists with high estimates of the average expansion will conclude that the galaxies have been around for less time. In contrast, scientists who think the galaxies have been around for longer think that the universe is slowly expanding. Currently, the age of the universe is thought to be 13.75 billion years.     What exactly is the Big Bang theory? “Fifteen billion years ago a tremendous explosion started the expansion of the universe, known as the Big Bang.” (LaRocco and Rothstein, n.d.) The Big Bang theory is an effort to explain what happened at the very beginning of our universe. Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown beyond reasonable doubt that our universe did in fact have a beginning. Prior to that moment there was nothing; during and after that moment there was something; our universe. After its initial appearance it inflated (the “Big Bang”), expanded and cooled, going from very, very small and very, very hot, to the size and temperature of our current universe.
