The Entrepreneurial Process
Many successful entrepreneurs tend to follow a process to develop their businesses. This process contains four stages toward achieving their dreams. The processes are identifying an opportunity, developing a business plan, assessing the need for resources, and finally developing a management program designed to achieve success. The entrepreneur must develop an understanding of this process as an important step. Developing an understanding of the entrepreneurial process can determine if a business venture is to be successful. Some phases of the entrepreneurial process may appear more important than the others but in reality each phase must be completed in succession in order for the process, and the business venture to be successful.
The first of the entrepreneurial process is to identify opportunity. This is sometimes referred to as the business model innovation (Barringer, 2008). It is during this phase that the entrepreneur must identify that in need for its product or service exists. Identifying a business venture begins by answering questions concerning the market environment and the possibility that existing market exists. This identification process attempts to analyze a possible target market that may exist for the use of this product or service. The acceptance by the target market must be analyzed for the potential use of any new product and the need for the product or service must be identified and analyzed also. It is also during this phase that the existence of a similar product or service can be discovered in the competition from the business environment can be compared for possible development of a product niche within the existing market. Identifying a business opportunity develops the entrepreneurial process through the development of an idea. As the identification of the opportunity advances to the next phase, evaluation and feasibility analysis begins.

    In this chapter, Peter Drucker presents four different entrepreneurial strategies. He starts pointing out that entrepreneurial strategies are as important for any business as entrepreneurial management is. He states that despite this fact there is almost no discussion about entrepreneurial strategies, despite their distinctive influence to the success of any business. Drucker distinguishes between entrepreneurial management, that is, practices and policies within the enterprise, and entrepreneurial strategies, that is, practices and policies outside. "Outside the enterprise" is understood as the marketplace the firm operates in. The author proposes four specific entrepreneurial strategies: 1. "Being fustest with the mostest" 2. "Hitting them where they ain't" 3. Finding and occupying a specialized "ecological niche" 4. Changing the economic characteristics of a product, a market or an industry The way Drucker calls these four strategies is evidently very methaphorical, almost a bit poetical, and it already gives an implicit, summed up explanation what these strategies are about. The author then goes into details and special characteristics of each of these strategies, with special focus on risks and opportunities. He supports his conclusions with a lot of examples from economic life, namely the success stories or failures of often well-known enterprises. One might easily find that the way corporations behave in the marketplace can be compared to the way animals behave in "wild" nature, as expressions like "finding an ecological niche" may suggest. Indeed, this interpretation is endorsed by the way Drucker describes the features of these strategies, sometimes, he even explicitly draws that comparison to biology. We will now have a closer look at each of the four strategies.     MEANING OF THE WORD ENTREPRENEURSHIP & ENTREPRENEUR The word Entrepreneurship is derived from the French verb “ENTERPRENDRE” and it literally means “between taker “or “go between”. According to Oxford Dictionary, Entrepreneur can be defined as “one who undertakes an enterprise, especially a contractor – acting as intermediary between capital and labour” EVOLUTION OF THE CONCEPT OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP Earliest Period An early example of the earliest definition of an entrepreneur as a go between is Marco Polo, who attempted to establish trade routes to the Far East. As a go between, Marco Polo would sign a contract with a money person (forerunner of today’s venture capitalists) to sell his goods. A common contract during this time provided a loan to the merchant adventurer at a 22.5 percent rate, including insurance. While the capitalist was a passive risk bearer the merchant adventurer took the active role in trading, bearing all the physical and emotional risks. When the merchant adventurer successfully sold the goods and completed the trip, the profits were divided with the capitalist taking most of them (up to 75 percent), while the merchant adventurer settled for the remaining 25 percent. Middle Ages In the middle ages, the term entrepreneur was used to describe both an actor and a person who managed large production projects. In such large production projects, this individual did not take any risks but merely managed the project using the resources provided, usually by the government of the country. A typical entrepreneur in the middle ages was the cleric – the person in charge of great architectural works, such as castles and fortifications, public buildings, abbeys and cathedrals. 17th Century The reemerging connection of risk with entrepreneurship was developed in the 17 th century, with an entrepreneur being a person who entered into a contractual arrangement with the government to perform a service or to supply stipulated products.
