The Gift of the Magi vs the Necklace

In “The Gift of The Magi” by O. Henry there’s a lower class married couple who would do anything for each other. Then in “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant is a middle class married couple, they learn what it truly means to be poor lower classmen. In both of these stories there are both similarities and differences in their plots and between the characters. They both also have ironic endings. The plots of these two stories differ from each other, but are still both ironic. In “The Necklace” Mathildes husband got her an invitation to a high class party, and she got upset and made a big deal about it because she didn’t have a new dress. She also wanted a necklace to go with that dress. So her husband bought her a new dress, and she ended up borrowing a necklace from her friend who is high class. She ends up losing the necklace and having to pay 10 years of debt due to that, she saw her friend 10 years later and found out the necklace was a fake. In “The Gift of The Magi” They both love each other and wanted to get Christmas presents for each other. So Della cut her hair off so she could by Jim a chain for his antique pocket. Jim sold his pocket watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. So that’s why it makes the story’s ending Ironic. Mathilde and Della are both the main characters in both stories. They don’t have much in common but they have a bunch of differences. Once similarity between the two is they are both hardworking. Mathilde had to work 10 years to pay off the necklace. In “The Gift of the Magi” Della had to get rid of something she really liked which was her hair. One difference is Della is loving person. She would do anything for Jim, even get rid of something she treasured a lot. There love is mutual. With Mathilde and her husband the loves not mutual she doesn’t love him as much as he loves her. Another difference is that Mathilde is manipulative because she manipulated her husband into buying her a dress when he was saving up a gun for
