The Lucky Strike

Ship Breaker

A Lucky Strike was one of those things that people envied. The characters in this book believe in the power of luck, and that you have to be lucky and smart to pull off a Lucky Strike. The people in this book believe in luck because of three main reasons. One is that the only way they can do their jobs every day is because of the chance they might get lucky. Another reason is that they are jealous of Lucky
Strike and that they could get lucky too. The third reason is that they don’t have a certain religion so they use the power of luck to believe in. The first reason the people in Ship Breaker believe in luck is because the only way they can keep doing their jobs every day is to hope they get lucky. In the book, the characters talk about Lucky Strike and how their work is boring but it could pay off if they get lucky. On page 78 the two main characters found something that could make them very lucky. “Suddenly she dashed past him, sprinting for the ship. ‘That’s scavenge!’” They were waiting for that break for a long time. The second reason is because they are jealous of Lucky Strike. The people in this book know about Lucky Strike, a guy who stole oil from a cargo ship he was scavenging. He became rich and famous. People called him Lucky Strike because he got lucky. They believe in luck because they want to get lucky just like him. On page 70 the main character describes Lucky Strike. “…and the money just rolled in, turning into gold nuggets that he hung glittering from the tips of his dreadlocks or else drove through his ears in thick gleaming rings. The man dripped wealth.” Everyone was jealous of him and how he got lucky. The last reason the people in Ship Breaker believe in luck is because they don’t have any religion so they use the power of luck as a belief. One of the side characters in the book talks about the luck gods and how you need to thank them if you get lucky. On page 48 a character says “We pray to the Rust
Saint to help us find something we can keep for ourselves. Hell, even my mom puts good rice on the
Scavenge God’s scale for a luck offering, and we just end up like Sloth.” They believe in the power of luck as a religion. The characters in this book believe so much in the power of luck. They believe in luck because there’s a chance they will get lucky which keeps them working. They also believe in luck because they are jealous of Lucky Strike and they need something to believe in due to lack of any religion. Throughout this book the main character is very lucky and he comes from one of those places where luck is needed.
The people in that kind of world need luck to keep them going and to look forward to something great.

Those who are still legendary today include George Herman Ruth Jr. (Babe Ruth) in Baseball, Jack Dempsey in Boxing, and Bobby Jones in Golf. To begin, Babe Ruth was well known for his freakish power as a home run hitter. With over 700 home runs, which still remains third on the all-time list, but remains a near impossible task for his era, he proves to be arguably the most iconic power figure of all time in baseball. His off the field actions were also a factor to his fame. As an alcoholic, he was the focus of even mainstream media of the time. He had many troubles off the field including car accidents, smoking, and patchy injuries over his career. In spite, he managed to persevere through these things and become what many still consider the greatest baseball player of all time and one of the most heroic figures in sports. In addition, Jack Dempsey was a World Heavyweight Champion for over 7 years, before his crown was stolen from Hall of Fame Gene Tunney. His rematch with Tunney years after, was the first to generate over $1 Million. Lastly, Bobby Jones revolutionized Golf, being the first one to win all 4 majors (also known as the Grand Slam). This is a feat that has only been accomplished by 5 people to this day. In addition, Racism among players became a trending issue of the time. Segregation was still strictly enforced and African-Americans were not…

Throughout the semester we have expounded upon various topics, but none have been more pivotal than the problem of evil. The problem of evil occurs when encounter the logical dilemmas resulting from the labeling of a deity as omniscient, omnipotent, and benevolent. While reflecting upon this topic, I thought of a question. Do religious people believe in luck? Furthermore does an atheist believe in luck, if not why not? Does luck differ from fortune or even destiny? Some claim that luck occurs to those that are prepared; I would have to repudiate such claims. The most vivid recollection of luck I’ve had was in eighth grade. The vice-principal also held the role of “dean.” To phrase it bluntly he was in charge of dishing out punishment. I had…

The hit that would shake the world and change my life forever occurred ten years ago. When I was seven years old just about to enter the first grade on a car ride back home from a family lunch my father asked me, “Son what do you think about playing football?”. Instantly my anxious mind said I would love to. My mother not so confident as my dad and I was always worried about what may happen on the football field, but seeing my love for the game she just could not find herself saying, “No”. I come out onto the football team of kids that had been playing with each other for a couple of years now. Being the new guy I knew I would have to step up and prove myself of the football player that I knew I could be. One player on our team was an exceptional athlete playing running back this young man just could not be tackled. Frustrated the coach asks, “Is there anybody at all that can bring down this guy?”. With a hard pumping heart I buckled up my chin strap and said, “Coach I can”.…
