The Worst Days of My Life
The worst days of my life

The worst days of my life involved a passage of my life where I thought I was losing my mother. My mum means the whole world to me, and when she had this unfortunate accident, I felt my world collapsing all around me.

It was back in December 1996 and the weather was horrible and absolutely freezing. There were small showers of snow as I was going to school. My day at school was coming to an end and I couldn’t be more than happy to go home. I was waiting outside for my mum, but there was no sign of her. Soon all I could hear was footsteps of the teachers, as all the noisy children had gone home. My teacher came along and asked me, “Are you still waiting for your mummy?” “Yeah she’s so late today” I replied and I nearly choked on my words, tears started to roll down my cheeks.

It was nearly 6pm, and I was crying my heart out in my teachers lap. Suddenly I saw my sister rushing through the gates. I was relieved immediately as I saw her. However I then looked at her face and realized that something was wrong. All she said to me was that mum’s gone to the doctors. At home I felt really restless I didn’t feel like eating or watching the TV.

It was getting very dark and I was getting more anxious by the minute. I shut my eyes but I couldn’t get a wink of sleep, so I got up and sat on the stairs. I was listening to my dad talking on the phone he was saying, “My wife has had an accident, so I can’t come to work tomorrow”. I felt a pang in my heart as I heard this. As soon as my sister came to my room at about 3am in the morning I asked her to tell me the truth about what happened to mum. So then she told me everything.

We had cousins in our house and my mum lost track of time, suddenly she realized that is was past 3.30 and I was still at school. She rushed out of the house wearing sandals in the snow. As she came up to number 40 she slipped and immediately fell on the ground. She tried to get up as quickly as she could, to avoid

I waited out in the cold and snow for what seemed like forever. I eventually saw our car pull up to the park. I saw my dad and my brother get out of the car and hurry towards me. When they got to me, my dad picked me up and carried me to the car. We got in and he drove me home. Then he helped me get out of the car. The pain was so bad I had to hop to the door. Once inside our house, I hopped over to the couch, and laid down.…

It was 2009 and I had been in sixth grade for a couple of months. I was on the phone with one of my friends from school when my mom called through my door for me to come out into the living room. I ignored her and kept talking for a few minutes when she called me out again. I rolled my eyes and told my friend I would call her right back. I walked into the living room and it seemed odd to me that both my sisters and dad were all out there too. I watched my mom take a deep breath with my dad by her side. As she began to speak her voice shook and gloss covered her eyes. “The doctors found a lump in my last mammogram.” she said. “It came back as cancer. I’m going to have to get treatment but I’m going to be okay.” No one else said a word, we all…

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

By the time the first semester of fifth grade ended, my parents were well split up. I guess it was some way to put an end to the constant bickering and daily arguments. During this time period, me and my sister had bonded greatly over many hours of being locked up in the basement or shut up in our bedroom. Being the oldest child hadn’t felt as satisfying to me anymore as I had watched my sister struggle to understand the revisions our family was making, nor did I have as much clarity of the situation at the time. After what seemed like an eternity of battles, my sister and I came home from a visit at our aunt’s house to find my dad sitting on the couch with a suitcase awaiting our arrival. The suddenness set up the moment to be a blur. Even though neither of us knew what was actually happening, we had sensed all the hurt emotions rushing from my mom in the form of tears. Soon, Mandy and I added to the puddle being…

I woke up in the hospital, the room was stuffy and the air had a undertone of bleach. Beautiful framed pieces of art hang the wall. There were vases of flowers in the room. I look around, every surface was dustless. The nurses were unhurried, they moved with a serene peacefulness from room to room on their rounds. Above the double doors were large blue plastic signs with the area of the hospital that lie ahead. I got this overwhelming feeling of wanting to cry. Brick by brick my walls were tumbling down. The feeling punched through my empty stomach ripping through my bones, guts, and muscles. I knew Ms. Anna would be upset.…
