Scout learns that certain people in town are feared, distrusted or hated because of their skin color, personal decisions, or rank on the social hierarchy, also known as class warfare. Colored people don’t receive as much respect as white people because they are lower in the social hierarchy than the white people who are on the top. By stepping into the shoes of Boo Radley, Walter Cunningham, and Dolphus Raymond, Scout learns a lot about class warfare. Tom Robinson is a black man who is falsely accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. The jury finds him guilty, and Scout knows that it was wrong. Her father, Atticus, was Tom’s lawyer, so she was able to experience each step of the trial. Arthur “Boo” Radley was feared by all of Maycomb because he stabbed his father with a pair of scissors when he was younger. Scout constantly wonders what it would feel like to be trapped in your house for so many years and be all alone to understand why Boo does not have great social skills and is quite shy. He left many things for the children in the hole of a tree, but expected nothing in return. Scout and Jem both recognized that he was not a bad man, and just needed some friends. Dolphus Raymond was the town dunk. Actually, he wasn’t. He drank Coca-Cola out of a paper bag to make everyone think that he was drunk. Dill and Scout got the opportunity to talk to him during the trail, when they decided to take a…

As a black woman who nannies white children, Calpurnia develops many similar characteristics of the stereotypical white woman. However, when she invites Scout and Jem to attend an all-African American church with her, the kids notice that she completely changes her way of speech and attitude. When Cal is at church, she is comfortable with herself and is at ease. In contrast, when she is working for the Finches, she acts proper and restricted. Similar to Brad, she is always hiding one side of her personality, depending on her surrounding community. Bringing Scout and Jem with her to the church was a turning point for Calpurnia because it shows that she gathered enough strength and courage to display another side of her life. Calpurnia has two places in two worlds, as the children discover. Calpurnia opens up to children because they resemble pure innocence, and would not judge her as adults would. This movement is a step towards maturity because Calpurnia is accepting the world and society she lives in, and decides that it is best she act proper around whites, and act as her true self around other blacks. Unlike Brad and Wemmick, Calpurnia clearly recognizes her change in behavior, yet adjusts to her community unconsciously. The members of the church and the whites outside of the church are unaware of the inconsistencies of Calpurnia’s…

For Scout and Jem, Mrs. Dubose is a distressing, barely human force that takes over their afternoons after Jem goes crazy on her camellias. Scout introduces her as “plain hell” mainly due to the fact that she was always bad-mouthing them and even called Atticus a “nigger-lover”. It is not until after she dies that Scout and Jem get a sense of what Atticus sees in her. Although the children believe that Mrs. Dubose is a thoroughly bad woman, Atticus admires her for the courage with which she battles her morphine addiction and hopes that Scout and Jem see that in her as well.…

Scout and Jem is not the well-spoken servant they made her out to be all these years in their house. Her role is the household is much different compared to other families. Calpurnia has pretty much taken the role as the “mom,” in the house. This one time, she disciplined Scout at the dinner table when they had Walter over for dinner and Scout made a rude comment. However, Scout’s and Jem’s view of Calpurnia changed when they went to church with her when Atticus could not take them. When they arrived at the church, Calpurnia was confronted by Lula for brining “white chillun” (Lee 119) in a black church. They heard Calpurnia use slang and words they had never ever come out of her mouth. This newly discovered side of Calpurnia confused the children. They could not understand how their well respected and well-spoken housemaid could be so “dirty.” When Scout questioned her about it later on, Calpurnia explained herself “folks don’t like to have somebody around knowin’ more than they do.” It aggravates ‘em. You’re not gonna change any of them by talkin’ right, they’ve got to want to learn themselves, and when they don’t want to learn themselves there’s nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language.” (Lee 126) Calpurnia’s explanation really answered Scout’s question as to why she had to “talk nigger-talk.” (Lee 125)…

Many people don't realize it, but our world matures with age, and the people along with it. Society's attitudes towards things, its moral education, and its general opinion on the world have all changed to adapt to the problems of today. In Harper's Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee shows how the world was before our moral development, and the evilness that the world once lived in. To Kill A Mockingbird shows the causes and effects of injustice through oppression of the innocent, racism, and existence of social inequality.…
