What Is Nature Or Nurture Argumentative Essay
Some people, like Mr. Golding believe that everyone is born with the potential ability to do evil, thus coming from our genes and hereditary implications. While on the other hand, Mr. Rousseau, who I agree with, believes that it is the environment around us that more determines our willingness to do evil or not. According to the article by Kendra Cherry, “What is Nature Versus Nurture”, she explains that “...environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our surrounding culture” is called Nurture. She compares it to the other commonly used term for this debate, Nature, which represents the genes and hereditary influences from our ancestors, from personal looks to our everyday personality. I believe that our environment and surroundings, or the nurture of us, affects us because we are all mentally asking ourselves every day if we are doing not what is right, but is normal to society. For evidence, in Lord of the Flies, most of them talked about normal life and how they would keep the island civil and no stupid arguments. In 1971, Philip Zimbardo began trying to prove his point by putting people in a severely strict prison with mean guards for 2 weeks and see how they mentally changed and reacted to the change of scene. The inmates began showing major levels of mental distress as well as emotional. Some people that portrayed the guards quit the experiment, and had to find fill ins quickly. Some people got so bad the conductors of the experiment took them out.
