Their very first audition was for Frank Sinatra who at that time owned Reprise Records. For a good deal of their music the boys used top session players, songwriters, and producers. Among their best known songs are “I’m a Fool” and “Not the Lovin’ Kind”. In 1965 they toured as an opening act for the Beach Boys and also opened for other famous groups such as the Lovin’ Spoonful.

Dino, Desi, and Billy released an album in 1965 and three albums in 1966. They basically sang songs which others had made popular. Smiley Smile is the twelfth studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys. It was released on September 18, 1967 and managed to reach number nine on the UK record charts. In the US however, it was not perceived as well and only managed to reach spot forty-one. The CD comes off weak compared to the album Smile, which was a much more well-constructed LP that was never released by the Beach Boys. Smiley Smile took a lot of its inspiration from Smile, the most notable change being that four pre-existing songs from smile were taken to Smiley smile with significantly scaled down arrangements. This however does not make Smiley Smile a bad CD. There are many elements to Smiley Smile that made it an album that stood out for its time such as its Lo-fi…

I recognized several of the songs they performed from songs my parents play in the car on road trips, and others from songs that have been covered in class. I was able to put my rock and roll knowledge to use when they played Norwegian Wood, as I knew that the sitar was the unusual instrument playing in the background. They included a mix of recent and old rock and roll songs. The songs they played ranged from the year of 1965 to…

The pop/ rock genre that the Goo Goo Dolls play today is what excites me more than the punk that they played in the beginning. The band in the beginning was made up of Robby Takac, John Rzeznik, and George Tutaska. Then seventeen years ago Mike Malinin replaced George. After recording their fourth album, the band split up due to John’s belief that George as not committed enough and the band’s money issues, Robby convinced John to reform the band without George (Heath). The Goo Goo Dolls started out as a punk band, but now they are a pop/ rock band. During their punk years Robby sang most of the vocals, but since the release of their third album, John does most of the vocals. They started out on Metal Blade records, but now they reside with Warner Brothers’ records. . In November of 1996, the Goo Goo Dolls filed a lawsuit against Metal Blade over issues regarding payment of royalties due to the band (Verna). With all these changes, the Goo Goo Dolls are constantly evolving to keep themselves relevant to this ever-changing music world.…

After a performance on February 2, 1959, several of the performers elected to fly in a plane chartered by Holly rather than ride on the tour bus with a broken heater in sub-zero temperatures. Valens earned a seat on the plane by winning a coin toss with Crickets guitarist Tommy Allsop and was killed along with Holly, the Big Bopper, and the 21-year-old pilot when the plane crashed in a cornfield. Richie Valens has to be one of my favorite musicians to this day, his music brings back good nostalgic memories and he broke tons of boundaries for Hispanic artist all over the globe. Though he does not have much music out, the very few songs that were released to the public did very good for him. I would have been cool to see what else he would have made if he didn’t die in that plane crash. He was so young and was doing big things, Rest In…

Phillips ended up producing, what is known today as, the first rock and roll song ever, Rocket 88. Jackie played the saxophone and was recorded with Ike Turner's Band. The local success of this band prompted B.B. King, artist signed to Sam's label Sun's Studio, to recommend them to Phillips who later produced several of their songs. After Sam passed this project on to Chess Records he then used this song's success to start Sun Records the next year. Without Sam's ability to mix and combine genres and to properly guide the artist to play something new but sounds good may have never invented “rock and…

Music during World War II The music during World War II was one of the most well-known and popular music eras of all times. Following the Great Depression, the 1930’s era called the “swing era” (Young & Young, 2008), was full of big bands, large dance halls and jitterbug-like beats that kept people on the dance floor. But little did America know that by the early 1940’s, their musical interests and tastes were soon going to change from upbeat tunes, to songs about war and love anthems. This change was brought by the war that Americans wanted to stay isolated from.…

The band was very small in size and was very good. The woman who I believe to be the singer bared a very heavy resemblance to jazz singers from the days of Duke Ellington, she was very good.
