A rationale of the outline scheme of work for Key Stage 3

Planning is a key part of teaching. Without a coherent plan lessons may lack structure and direction. Long and medium term planning are an important part of this and in this rationale I hope to demonstrate that my planning does indeed have all of these qualities.
The first element to be considered when rationalising this scheme of work is whether or not it meets the needs of Key Stage 3 pupils. I believe that it does because the attainment focus is all within Key Stage 3. However, this is only the very simplest level by which we can measure this criterion. Firstly, we can also measure it by matching the scheme of work to the programme of study. If we look at this we can see that pupils have the opportunity to study all of these elements . The second way in which we could measure this criterion is by looking at the course content. I think that this course is very challenging. It asks pupils to engage with controversial and modern issues. Some might think that this is too difficult for pupils to understand. However, I disagree with this. In my experience of teaching pupils are keen to engage with issues that are current and relevant. These issues can even be quite complex but as long as the pupils are given the vocabulary and this is explained they are quite capable of discussing these issues and often show large degrees of insight. In this way I think that my scheme of work certainly meets the needs of Key Stage 3 pupils.
Of course, there may be some question as to whether this scheme as described above is only suitable for the more able pupils. However, in my experience of teaching this is not the case. It simply requires good differentiation for less able pupils to be engage with these topics and once again I think that teachers may be surprised to hear what insight pupils can show in these matters. Personally, I have always felt that it slightly patronising to assume that just because

    One of the ways that the learning can be differentiated is through the support given to the children. This could be whether or not they get adult support as well as the support offered through the use of worksheets and resources. Resources that could be implemented in order to ensure that lower ability students are still able to progress in their learning include, key word banks, work sheets with additional support e.g sentence starters and flashcards. By implementing these resources and support systems it allows the lower ability students to achieve the same lesson objectives just with additional guidance.     A scheme of work is, as defined by Ian Reece and Stephen Walker (Teaching, Training and Learning, a practical guide Page 240) “a series of planned learning experiences, sequenced to achieve the course aims in the most effective way”. It may include subject content, teaching strategies, student activities, assessments, evaluations and resources. But Reece goes on to explain that and scheme of work is complex and may be influenced by external sources such as Students behaviour or resources that are available. This is all too apparent within my own specialism in Health and Safety; my scheme of work must be flexible as this course is taught over a relatively short period of time to a large number of students (up to 7000 in a year) all with different abilities and different job titles. It is key that the subject matter is taught on the same level to all abilities as all have a responsibility toward health and safety . Regardless of job title all have to acknowledge the importance of the core material and be able to act upon it within their own role. Be it a manager who has to ensure safety of all their staff or the individual who has to act in the safest possible way to protect themselves and others. My scheme of work has to work for the large variety of students who attend so it must be precise within the eyes of the law but also give the knowledge and practical application of health and safety.     This was further complicated by wide range of abilities within the p7 group, for example some pupils were working on first level Mathematics with the majority on second level. In all the classes that I spent time in during my placement children were arranged in ability groups for curriculum areas like Mathematics and Literacy, with differentiation encouraged in planning to account for this. Differentiation can be carried out in variety of ways for example, by task, output, level of support or by classroom management and consideration of learning environment (STEC, n.d). By using a variety of these approaches to accommodate differences amongst all learners, children with additional support needs should not feel excluded (Florian & Black-Hawkins, 2011). Flavey et al. (as cited by STEC, n.d) also recommend that such differentiated approaches should be kept simple and used sparingly to avoid limiting a pupil’s possibilities. On placement, children with additional needs were also withdrawn at times for one to one or small group support. This approach has been criticised as a form of exclusion were pupils often miss out on other parts of the curriculum (Muijs & Reynolds, 2001).
