Experiment 6: Fractional Distillation.
Separation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons

Abstract: A mixture of cyclohexane and toluene were separate from one another by fractional distillation in order to measure the composition of each fraction and prepare the sample for gas chromatography.

Introduction: Distillation has been used since antiquity to separate the components of mixtures. This method has been used to manufacture different organic chemicals but the most recent application is the refining of petroleum in order to produce fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals. In this experiments, the separation of 2 distilates were carried out using the differences in boiling points and the data was used for a gas chromatography test.

Objectives: Separation of an equimolar mixture of cyclohexane and toluene by fractional distillation

Materials:

Equimolar mixture: cyclohexane/toluene Water Distilling columns Column packing Thermometer heat source flasks

Description: 40ml of an equimolar mixture of cyclohexane and toluene was obtained and transferred into a 100ml round bottomed boiling flask which contained boiling chips. The distilling column was packed with metal sponge and the height was measured in centimeters and recorded. The distillation apparatus was assembled and a heat mantle was set. Several vials were used as fraction receivers. The vials were labeled, 1-4, and weighed prior to adding the liquid mixture and after the liquid was added. The temperature was recorded before adding heat in order to begin distillation (20º C). The temperature was recorded prior to each distillation fraction and after each 2ml of distillate which was recorded in table 1. The system was turned off and cooled down letting the remaining condensed vapor drain into the round bottomed flask. This sample was transferred by pipette into a vial

    The distillation procedure is initiated by gradually heating the mixture until it reaches the temperature of the liquid with the lower boiling point. This liquid then turns into a vapor and leaves to mixture and is collected by the set up apparatus. In fractional distillation a vigreux column is used. This provides for surface area for condensation to occur. At each condensation event the vapor is enriched in the low boiling point component and the liquid is enriched in the high boiling point component.     There are millions of different organic compounds. Most of them are found in mixtures and in order to achieve a pure form they need to be separated, isolated, and purified. However, there are endless numbers of possible mixtures, which make it impossible to have a pre-designed procedure for every mixture. So chemists often have to make their own procedures. The purpose of this experiment was to prepare the student to the real world by them designing their own procedure which will help them understand the techniques of separation and purification better. The goal was to extract two of the components of the mixture that consisted of 50% benzoic acid, 40% benzoin, and 10% dibromobenzene. The benzoic acid was extracted by the use of base and extraction technique. Then a crystallization was performed in order to separate benzoin by the use of hexane a solvent, leaving the dibromobenzne in the mother liquor. The percent recovery for benzoic acid was 91.8% and 80.3% for the benzoin. The MP for benzoic acid was 119-122°C (1) and 135-136°C (2)for the benzoin. The high percent recovery and closeness of measured MP to the literature value indicate that the designed procedure was successful.…

    In the following project we are discussing about distillation. The operation of the distillation is employed for the purification of liquids from non-volatile impurities. The liquid is heated to the vapor phase and then is collected and recondensed to give back the pure liquid .The non-volatile impurities are left behind in the flask. Here our main focus will be at the fractional distillation. It is the process in which we separate the different components of a mixture on the basis of the difference in their boiling points. When their boiling points differ by more than 10°C.It is mainly use for the mixture of components having less boiling point difference. When the liquids present in the mixture have their boiling points close to each other (i.e. less than 10°C) the separation is best effected by fitting the distillation flask with the fractionating column. In this process a fractionating tower is used. The mixture is preheated and converted into the vapor form and then allowed to enter the fractionating tower. The temperature in fractionating tower differs with the height. Fractionating tower is provided with the different tray like shelves where different fractions having different condensation temperatures are obtained. Although the products obtained from this technique is not 100% pure. Every fraction obtained from the distillation column still contains some impurity of the fraction lower to it. These are separated and if more purification is required the distillate is redistilled. The main application of fractional distillation is in the petroleum industry.
