The authoritarian parenting style causes a variety of child outcomes, such as, aggressive behavior outside the home, depression, anxiety and the urge to become rebellious. In Essay # 20, My Father’s Parenting vs. My Parenting, the author states that she did become rebellious from this parenting style. She also stated in her essay that she always looked for nurturing and unconditional love from her dad, but it was never there. This caused her and her father to never actually have a good father-daughter relationship. Having a father-daughter relationship or any parenting relationship with a child is important for a child’s development. There is nothing wrong with discipline, but it has to be proper disciple. Children can be punished and yelled out, but they need to know why they are being punished or yelled out and what they did wrong to receive the punishment they…
Parenting style is one of many factors that strongly influence child development. One’s choice of parenting style is most often molded by their cultural background. American parents use a myriad of parenting styles, all of which have their roots in various cultural beliefs about which method is best to raise a child. In 1971, clinical and developmental psychologist, Diana Baumrind, recognized three different categories of parenting styles that she believed described most parents’ methods (Berger, 2011). Parents who fell into the authoritarian style of parenting set high standards and strict rules for their children. Disobedience was not tolerated and was met with harsh consequences, often physical. The authoritarian parent rarely showed affection or concern for their children’s emotional needs. On the other side of the spectrum was a permissive style of parenting that was characterized by no boundaries or discipline, but did include a lot of parental involvement and affection. Authoritative parenting was the third style Baumrind identified. She believed this style produced the most happy, well-adjusted, and successful children and adolescents (Baumrind, 1971). An authoritative parent set high clear standards for their children. They respected their children’s opinions and concerns and offered plenty of support and encouragement. This style is often referred to as the balanced or “democratic” style. Later a fourth category was added by Maccoby and Martin, who recognized a neglectful parenting style (Berger, 2011; Maccoby & Martin, 1983). The neglectful parent provided for the basic needs of their children, but nothing else. This style involved no demands, boundaries, emotional support, guidance or affection. The mother and father that utilized this method basically detached from their children. While these four categories are still widely used today to classify the types of…

Putting parents in categories according to whether they are positive or negative on their demands and responsibility. The four main parenting styles are indulgent, authoritarian, authoritative, and uninvolved. There is a vast difference between parental over-involvement and under-involvement. Provided were examples of over-involved parents who use harsh rules and unattainable expectations to parent adolescents. Under-involvement parenting styles are described as parenting that lacks warm and is avoided, or in other words the parents will overlook or avoid the disciplinary actions that come with parenting and focus on being the adolescents “casual” friend, this is also known as permissive or neglectful parenting (Story, 2011). For this paper, warmth is defined as acceptance between child-parent relationships. Neglectful parents tend to lack the basics of finding rules and regulations for their adolescent children to follow, which will help them behave…
Mothers have always been the role model when it comes to nurturing and child rearing. However, since the last couple of years have seen Fathers play a crucial role in the upbringing of children. Every decision that a parent makes in terms of the way they discipline and comfort their child directly affects multiple aspects of that child’s life as they grow and develop. Different parenting choices develop into parenting styles, or the practices that parents exhibit in relation to their children and their beliefs about those practices (Arnett, 2012). Diana Baumrind communicated four differing parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and disengaged. Each of the four styles of parenting is based on the dimensions…
In Introduction to Psychology by Charles Stangor, he explains that there are four different parenting styles; you have the authoritative parents who believe that their child will learn right from wrong through mature behavior and reason. Then, you have the authoritative parents that believe spanking or hitting their child is they way to teach them to behave, they also go by a very strict set of rules. Next, there is a permissive parent, who has very few rules and don’t really attention to their own kids. Last, you have the uninvolved parents who just leave their children to do whatever they want. The main ones that oppose and support spanking are the authoritative and the authoritarian (Stangor 184-185).…

Although this category sounds similar to authoritarian,…
